Alan DuPont, geopolitical security expert and Lowy Institute fellow, presented a keynote at our Vivid Ideas event exploring five root causes as to why democracy is being disrupted around the world.

Alan explores economic, political, technological and social change, the impact of population growth on infrastructure, and increased opportunities for citizen engagement enabled by new engage tech. There is also the bigger issue of how to restore trust in the integrity of process, politicians and public institutions, which has been lost over the last twenty years.

In his final comment, Alan says, “The system is not broken. It needs work. We’ve still got a pretty healthy democracy in Australia. It’s probably one of the best forms of governance in the world. So we need to remember the good things about our system.”
